MARC-ALEXANDRE BRÛLÉ
Founder and artistic director
Trained as a set designer Marc-Alexandre Brûlé fosters a pluridisciplinary approach to the stage by placing illusionism at the heart of his artistic process.
Along with his collaborations as an illusion designer with numerous directors, he contributes to the emerging contemporary magic scene since 2001 with projects like L’An de Main, Fantasmagoria, Clara (Théâtre La Chapelle) and Automates, original pieces for ‘’non-magician’’ dancers and actors that he writes, directs and produces on the Montreal’s alternative stages. In his work the archetypal magician figure is embodied by a group of performers who re-ritualize the magical act, highlighting its inherent themes and stylistic features. Staying away from the ‘’box swinging’’ tradition, the illusion techniques become exploratory tools, imposing themselves as a structuring element at the crossroads of artistic disciplines.
Since 2002, Marc-Alexandre also contributed as technical and lighting director to major European and American tours (Cirque Éloize, Théâtre Sans Fil) and to the works of Héloïse Depocas (É.N.C., Cinars/La Tohu, Bourse Rideau, Vue sur la relève), Jean-Pierre Gauthier (MACM) and Diane Labrosse. Multiple times recipient of Canada’s Arts Council Grants, he also undertook mentorship with renowned magicians Jeff McBride and Eugene Burger.
